MINERAL WELLS — School trustees here accepted the resignation Wednesday night of Superintendent John Kuhn, who is set to take the top administrative position for Abilene ISD on April 26.

The board minutes later named Assistant Superintendent David Tarver as interim superintendent.

“I don’t want to second (the motion), but I’ll second,” Trustee Donna Henderson said before the board unanimously accepted the eight-year superintendent’s resignation.

Kuhn, who in an earlier stint as a Ram was a classroom teacher and bus driver, thanked trustees for the teamwork he relied on since taking the district helm in 2016.

“I just want to say, thank you, publicly to everyone in this room,” Kuhn said after the vote. “It’s been challenging but fun, and very professionally gratifying. and you guys have been wonderful to work for.”

Board President Sunny Lee credited Kuhn for upholding his end of their mutual goals.

“You look over the years, there’s been nothing but success,” she said. “It’s a symbiotic relationship.”

Tarver, a 27-year district veteran holding the second-in-command position since 2016, said he aspires to make the promotion permanent.

“Absolutely,” he replied. “Mineral Wells is my home, this is where I want to be. … The first thing to do is listen to the people who are here and what people have to say and what we need to do to make Mineral Wells continue to be the best it can continue to be.”
