MINERAL WELLS — Cool's Casey James received some chilly feedback after his performance Tuesday night on "American Idol."
James tried to his rocker abilities, playing electric guitar while covering Gavin DeGraw's "I Don't Want to Be."
Reactions were mixed. The audience did not seem into the performance. Judge Randy Jackson said he was impressed with James' guitar playing. Ellen DeGeneres was complimentary overall, but said she wanted to see more showmanship from James.
Kara DioGuardi, who has been teased as having a love crush on James, stung the local hopeful with her remarks, saying he took "two steps back" and said his vocal performance suffered as a result of his guitar playing.
"This is a singing competition," DioGuardi said.
Simon Cowell joked with DioGuardi, asking if she was upset because James didn't return her calls.
He then agreed with DioGuardi's criticism, saying James' performance was like one he would see in many clubs from aspiring rock musicians. He said James' voice lacked the "grit" to perform the song.
"That hurts," responded James. "No grit?"
"No grit," repeated Cowell. "More like sand."
"More like dirt," said DioGuardi.
James and the other nine remaining male contestants performed Tuesday night. They were scheduled to perform Wednesday, but producers made a change to have the female group sing Wednesday night because of a medical issue involving contestant Crystal Bowersox.
The results of the nation's votes will air Thursday. Two more males and two more females will be eliminated that night, leaving 16 contestants standing.
