Two dead in early morning shooting

From Staff Reports

Two individuals died this morning from injuries sustained following what neighbors described as multiple gunshots.

The victims were identified as Brenda Daniela Baker, 23, and Magda Karina Hernandez-Medina, 22.

"At approximately 4:38 a.m., the Mineral Wells Police Department received a 911 call in reference to a shooting in the 1900 block of S.E. 21st Avenue," said interim Police Chief Scott Mitcham.

In addition to police, Mineral Wells Fire/EMS personnel also responded to the scene, he said.

"Upon arrival, it was determined there were two female victims," Mitcham said, declining to identify either at this point in the investigation.

"One victim was deceased," he explained, "and the other was treated and flown by air ambulance to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth, where she was pronounced deceased."

Police declined to discuss any possible suspects or motive.

Two individuals staying in the residence across the street said they were awakened "between 4:30 and 5" this morning by the sound of gunfire.

"We heard gunshots," said Lacey Poe, "like four, but I didn't want to look outside because ... I heard gunshots and that's not normal around here."
