VETERANS CORNER: White House moves to protect vets from some for-profit schools tactics

By Jim Vines | jim.helpingveterans@gmail.com

Military and veteran students have increasingly become the target of deceptive recruiting practices by for-profit schools since the post-9/11 GI Bill became law April 27.

The White House took a major step in restricting the ability of for-profit schools to take advantage of veterans.

The executive order signed by President Obama will concentrate on six areas:

• Help ensure military and veteran students have the information they need. Schools that accept GI Bill tuition will be required to provide the “Know Before You Owe” financial aid form, which will help inform students on tuition and fees, federal financial aid and outcomes like graduation rates. Schools that participate will be listed on the VA’s website www.va.gov/schools.

• Keep bad actors off military installations. Schools with a history of poor behavior in their recruitment strategies will be prevented from setting up shop on military bases.

Even as the Pentagon lifts the ban on women in combat roles, returning servicewomen are facing a battlefield of a different kind. They are now the fastest growing segment of the homeless population, an often invisible group bouncing between sofa and air mattress, overnighting in public storage lockers, living in cars and learning to park inconspicuously on the outskirts of shopping centers to avoid the violence of the streets.
