City voters OK liquor sales; first store opens

MINERAL WELLS — Following May 12 election results allowing package stores in Mineral Wells and the subsequent definition of such businesses, several prospective entrepreneurs submitted requests to open the city's first off-premise liquor retailer.

The application for a store in the 700 block of S.E. 6th Avenue drew criticism from nearby churches and Travis Elementary School administrators. Council members were initially deadlocked in voting to approve or deny the applicants specific use permit.

Council subsequently decided to forego the requirement of applicants to attain a specific use permit from the city before applying to the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission.

Top Shelf Liquor Warehouse, located in the 4500 block of U.S. Highway 180 East was the first package store established in the city since off-premise liquor sale was approved.
