According to the Children’s Advocacy Center of Texas:
• Texas has 65 child advocacy centers, more than any other state.
• The 65 CACs cover 94 percent of the state’s population.
• Of Texas’ 254 counties, 162 are served by a CAC.
• Out of 40,000 child victims in Texas last year, 26 percent were not old enough to attend kindergarten.
• Out of 40,000 child victims each year, 67 percent are female.
• Today, 185 children in Texas will be the victims of abuse.

Helping abused children at center of local effort

Group taking steps to create Children’s Advocacy Center

Dozens of community leaders and concerned citizens attended a presentation Monday afternoon at Linkfield Services to learn about the proposed creation of a Children’s Advocacy Center in Palo Pinto County.

Ada McCloud, program specialist for Children’s Advocacy Centers of Texas Inc., led the program by detailing what a CAC provides to a community.

Dealing primarily with young victims of sexual abuse, she said centers provide child-sensitive investigation, intervention and therapeutic services for abused children.

The program’s goal is twofold, she said, explaining advocates seek to minimize the re-victimization of abused children while facilitating the prosecution of perpetrators.
