9-year-old on bike hit, injured

By CHRIS AGEE

Mineral Wells Police report a passing motorist struck a 9-year-old boy as he was riding his bicycle in southwest Mineral Wells.

Reports indicate the juvenile was traveling south on S.W. 7th Avenue as a vehicle approached from the opposite direction.

The child failed to yield right-of-way, police said, and was hit by a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe driven by Heather Renee Talley, 28, of Mineral Wells.

The juvenile was airlifted from the scene to Cooks Children's Hospital, according to reports.

Police indicated he was not wearing a safety helmet.

According to reports, Talley and a juvenile passenger were uninjured in the crash, and no charges have been filed against the driver.

The child's mother, Mandi Bass, told the Index Thursday he was released from the hospital Wednesday evening and is doing well.

"He had a mild concussion [and] a crack in his pelvic area on his left side," she said. "He was left with a few scrapes," she added, but "he's laughing and joking about it."

Bass said she witnessed the incident as she rode alongside him on the street.

"It caught me off guard, but I learned to deal with stress really well and hold my reactions until after the fact," she said, noting her demeanor helped calm her son in a traumatic situation.
