Local students hope to raise money for shooting victims

By CHRIS AGEE

In the wake of the horrific mass shooting last week at an elementary school in Newtown, Conn., two Mineral Wells High School students are planning a citywide bake sale Saturday with all proceeds going to help the victims and their families.

“Considering that no one does plan to bury their child, it’s really a tough situation to go through,” said Gabby Kindle, who is organizing the fundraiser with Courtney Havens.

The MWHS junior said baked goods will be available at Metro, Tractor Supply, Ace Hardware, and My Father’s Business between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Saturday.

“I just thought the whole country needs to pay it forward to them and they deserve to get help,” she said, explaining she plans to contact the Newtown Chamber of Commerce to determine a “reliable resource” to distribute the donation.

In addition to Havens, Kindle said many students have joined in the effort and school organizations including the National Honor Society and Student Council have also helped.
