MWISD – making students hungry for Pi

By LIBBY CLUETT

March is a month full of celebration, and many math aficionados have their sites on next week's Pi Day, a worldwide celebration of the mathematical constant 3.14159, or Pi.

This number represents the ratio of a circle's circumference to its diameter.

Since Pi Day – appropriately, March 14 – falls in the middle of spring break, Mineral Wells ISD celebrated Friday morning with learning activities at each campus.

Houston Elementary had all sorts of contests, including how many digits kids could remember after the decimal point – an infinite number. The winner reached 43 digits, but mathematicians have calculated Pi to over one trillion digits beyond its decimal point.

Each grade level at Houston also tried to bring in 314 cans of food to be donated to a local food bank.

Other campuses joined the early celebration. Debbie Yates' and Autumn Lanes' eighth grade math students explored the outdoors around Mineral Wells Junior High, finding circular objects that would measure up to Pi – meter covers, the base of a flagpole and a photographer's camera lens.

Students at Travis Elementary and the high school also partook in the math celebration.

Second grader Ymani Wilson perhaps had the most fun by being the Houston Good Citizen prize winner, granting her a chance to serve a pie in the face of music teacher Adam Hull.
