A government stimulus program designed to fund public housing improvements resulted in confusion and frustration for those in the Mineral Wells Housing Authority tasked with obligating the money.
Authority Executive Director Harry Small Jr. said the department received $114,057 under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which he intended to use to replace cabinetry in the area’s public housing.
“You had to have it obligated by such-and-such deadline and had to have it spent within two years,” he explained. “What happened was when we got the original bids ... they were well and beyond the $114,000 and we went out and did it again.”
The second bid was considerably less, he said, and resulted in about a $14,000 surplus.
