Smokers: give your lungs a break Thursday and try to ‘kick the habit’

In an effort to inform the public about the anesthesia risks associated with smoking, the American Association of Nurse Anesthetists is urging smokers across the country to “give their lungs a break” and quit smoking for a day as part of Thursday’s annual Great American Smokeout.

As the organization representing the nation’s leading experts on anesthesia and patient airways, the AANA would like to see all smokers “kick the habit” permanently.

The AANA is encouraging smokers to quit because those who quit smoking days before undergoing a scheduled procedure involving anesthesia can reduce their risk of complications.

Of course, smokers should equally consider all of the health-related risks associated with smoking.

“We understand that smoking is an addiction that can be extraordinarily difficult to overcome. However, as anesthesia professionals it is important that we warn the public that smoking compromises a person’s health both inside and outside of the operating room,” said Janice Izlar, a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist and president of the 45,000 member AANA.

The Great American Smokeout is sponsored by the American Cancer Society and takes place each year on the third Thursday of November. This special observance day was created to encourage smokers to make their plan to quit smoking for good or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.
