Energy provider Oncor recently released plans to install smart meters in homes and businesses in the region over the next few months.
According to Oncor Area Manager Ken Harriss, the installation is in conjunction with the company’s Advanced Metering System project, expected to affect more than 3 million homes and businesses within its service area by the end of the year.
Electromechanical meters, which are the industry standard today, contain aging technologies which limit their function, Harriss explained.
Smart meters, however, are digital and offer features such as energy consumption control, energy cost savings and greater reliability in power delivery.
