Iris Remembered

White bikes dapple Texas roadways. These “ghost bikes” serve as memorials to fallen cyclists – either riders who have been killed, like Iris Stagner last September, or severely injured when hit by a motor vehicle. This photo of the ghost-bike tribute to Stagner was taken just days after her death. It rests near a tree, alongside U.S. Highway 180 West, at the northwestern edge of the Brazos River bridge. The tribute evolves as people bring flowers and mementos. Pictured hanging from the white bike are some of Stagner's cycling awards. This weekend's bicycle races are a memorial to Stagner, who not only raced, but worked hard to bring races to Palo Pinto County, races which continue to benefit citizens and businesses.
