One dead after roadside altercation

A disagreement between two men in the middle of U.S. Highway 180 East resulted in one being fatally stabbed in the chest and the other facing murder charges.

The mid-afternoon incident happened in the 4300 block of U.S. 180 in September and Jose Luis Ramos, 40, was taken into custody from the scene. Damon Desdunes, 27, died shortly after being transported to Palo Pinto General Hospital.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing Ramos in a vehicle pursuit of Desdunes, adding both men pulled over before Desdunes emerged with a baseball bat.

Witnesses say he dropped the bat after realizing Ramos had a knife.

Reports indicate Ramos stabbed Desdunes once in the arm and once in the heart.

A Palo Pinto County grand jury declined to indict Ramos, who was being held in county jail under $500,000 bond prior to the grand jury’s decision earlier this month.

District Attorney Michael Burns said he doesn’t know the reason behind the grand jury’s decision, explaining there was “an issue of self-defense in the case.”
