GRAFORD – A fire ignited by welding activity and fanned by strong wind gusts took off Tuesday morning on the Wagley Ranch, located about 9 miles north of Mineral Wells.
Graford Volunteer Fire Department first responded to the ranch fire, which burned an estimated 100 acres just west of Turkey Creek Road and south of State Highway 254. Soon Graford requested mutual aide from Mineral Wells VFD and Palo Pinto, followed by Lone Camp and Possum Kingdom East VFDs.
The fire not only consumed grass and trees near its origin, but took off with a spur, north toward SH 254, requiring more vehicles and water.
Lone Camp VFD Chief Charlie Sims took command of the main section and attempted to keep the fire from burning up a hill in a densely wooded area. Once Lone Camp arrived, MWVFD Captain Jerry VanNatta and Mineral Wells crews chased the spur.
