According to a police spokesperson, officers were performing off-duty security work at a business in the 200 block of S.W. 5th Street when they caught a gas thief.
Reports indicate business owners complained of several incidents of gas theft in recent weeks and hired Mineral Wells officers to serve as security.
Around 3:30 a.m. Friday, the off-duty officers reportedly spotted Tomas Valdez Navarette, 33, of Mineral Wells, on the premises and attempted to detain him.
Navarette attempted to elude officers on foot but was caught a short time later.
Police arrested him for burglary of a vehicle and evading arrest or detention.
Bypassing checkout
Police arrested Glen Edward Long Jr., 34, of Mineral Wells, after he reportedly left a business in the 600 block of Farm-to-Market Road 1821 North with several stolen items.
Reports allege he placed a television, several videos and a case of beer into a shopping cart and pushed it out of the store’s front door without paying.
Long was arrested for theft between $500 and $1,500.
Property crimes
• According to an attempted burglary report filed Friday, residents in the 300 block of S.E. 21st Street woke during the previous night to a noise and, upon investigating, determined someone tried to remove a window air-conditioning unit.
• A Christmas decoration valued at $900 was reportedly stolen from the yard of a residence in the 200 block of N.W. 7th Avenue. According to a theft report filed Saturday, the complainant awoke during the night to investigate a noise, saw an unknown vehicle fleeing the area and discovered the decoration missing.
