Head-on collision kills two, injures one near Santo on 2201

By CHRIS AGEE

SANTO – According to Santo EMS Chief Brian Gordon, his agency responded to three serious crashes between Thursday and Friday, including a head-on collision that killed two occupants.

He said a Ford Mustang and a Chrysler PT Cruiser crashed shortly before 6 p.m. Thursday, killing both occupants of the Chrysler and seriously injuring the Ford's driver.

Department of Public Safety Sgt. Lonny Haschel explained the crash was still under investigation as of Friday afternoon but provided preliminary details of the incident.

He explained DPS troopers responded to the crash, about 2.5 miles east of Santo on Farm-to-Market Road 2201, at 5:43 p.m.

According to Haschel, investigators determined the 2008 Ford, driven by Nathan Nichols, 22, of Santo, was traveling east as Carolyn K. Veach, 54, of Santo, was approaching from the opposite direction.

Nichols crossed into the westbound lane and struck Veach's vehicle, Haschel said, noting the reason for his loss of control has not been determined.

Veach and her passenger, James King, 44, of Santo, were pronounced dead at the scene, Haschel said.

He added Nichols was transported to John Peter Smith Hospital in Fort Worth with serious injuries.

According to Gordon, two crashes early Friday morning created some traffic congestion but did not result in any serious injuries.

The first involved a tandem rig semi-trailer truck traveling eastbound on Interstate 20 at Palo Pinto Creek Bridge, Gordon said.

The truck hit a cow in the roadway, crossed the median and overturned, Gordon said, noting westbound lanes were blocked until the scene could be cleared.

The second crash, a one-vehicle rollover, happened later Friday morning on Farm-to-Market Road 4 at Ward Mountain Road, he said.

According to Gordon, the vehicle's driver failed to negotiate a curve in the road and overcorrected, causing the vehicle to flip.

The vehicle's occupants, both female teens, escaped injury in the crash, Gordon explained.
