Putting to rest mysteries of old Wolters cemetery

By Mary Creighton | Special to the Index

In the past few years, a cemetery was located on private property at the Wolters Industrial Park area just west of the Fort Wolters Historical Park.

There was some confusion as to who might be buried there. According to Fort Worth resident Imogene Nimmo, one story was that there was an Indian fight and perhaps those killed are some of those buried there. Another story is that the cemetery is the final resting places for members of the Howard family who gave the property for Camp Wolters.

Nimmo, 86, is still very active in genealogy. In her research she found that a family by the name of Howard was the group that either gave or sold their land to the Chamber of Commerce or City of Mineral Wells so Gen. Wolters could build a summer training camp for all the mounted cavalry in the state of Texas back in 1925.

“This was done and the rest is history as far as what was done with the land,” she said.
