I come from a family of fishing maniacs. At every opportunity during my growing up years, we headed onto the lake in our little boat. I was the oldest of three kids, so it fell my lot to jump out and secure the boat whenever we decided to tie up along the shore.
One day when I was about 12 we were approaching a favorite picnic spot, a broad rock about 30 feet wide that rose in a gentle slope from the water. I was poised on the bow with a rope in my hand, ready to leap over and pull the boat close enough for the family to climb out.
