SENIOR SCENE: Simple Thanks

By Vivian Conrad, Mineral Wells Senior Center Executive Director

Still recoiling from the horrific events that dominated last week’s news, I’m having trouble tempering my deep sorrow with holiday cheer for this week’s column.  So instead of sharing an amusing anecdote, I will acknowledge the spirit of love and giving that characterizes this holiday season and give thanks to all the people to whom we owe gratitude.

We would like to thank those who have so generously supported the Senior Center this year – to Waddy’s Best Value Pharmacy for sponsoring our monthly birthday party; to Cole’s House of Flowers for a beautiful floral arrangement given to one of our birthday celebrants each month; to Brenda Lee for leading daily exercises and to the City Dept. of Parks and Recreation for allowing us to use their facilities for our annual garage sale; to Armor Self-Storage for the use of a locker; to Lisa Clutts for sharing her November-December Avon profits with us; to the beautiful ladies from Abbi Home Care, Mineral Wells Medical Supply, Palo Pinto Home health, Mineral Wells Nursing and Rehab, IntegraCare, Lakewell House, Family Care of Texas, and Palo Pinto Nursing & Rehab Therapy who sponsor weekly games, donate party door prizes, conduct health checks and Health Education presentations, and provide foot care; to Beall’s, Bargains for Better Homes, Joe’s Pizza, Pizza Hut, My Father’s Business, Awesome Blossoms, and the Palo Pinto Hospital Auxilliary Gift Shop for donating door prizes for our parties and dances; to Joe Baker for donating his time to DJ our dances; to the Mineral Wells Index for running our weekly column; to Max Wheeler and all our band members for sharing their musical talents; to Chubby’s, Shotgun’s and Natty Flat BBQ restaurants for donating food and smoking meat for our parties and fundraisers; to First Baptist Church for their help with this year’s Senior Expo; to Palo Pinto General Hospital, Baum-Carlock-Bumgardner Funeral Home, and First Financial, First State and Titan Banks for their consistent sponsorship of our fundraisers; to United Way, the City of Mineral Wells and Palo Pinto County whose grants enable our yearly budget; to our Board of Directors who selflessly give time and energy; and to the many, many other volunteers and contributors that I can’t mention by name here because there just isn’t enough room.  I will continue our list of thank-yous next week.

On behalf of the participants and staff of Mineral Wells Senior Center, I offer a heart-felt Thanks to all the people and organizations who keep us running.  May your lives be filled with the warmest of God’s love and blessings.

My son is an EMT ambulance driver in Oklahoma City. On Monday he spent hours pulling people, alive and dead, from the rubble of what had been their schools and homes.

I’ve never bet on a horse race in my life. But I’m a Louisville girl, born and bred, so it just wouldn’t seem right not watching the Kentucky Derby on the first weekend of May.
