I wanted my children to grow up feeling comfortable around people of all ages, so when they were young we made weekly visits to a local nursing home. They chatted with folks who were bed-bound and climbed onto the laps of those in wheelchairs. The residents always seemed to enjoy the kids.
Apparently those experiences made an impact on my oldest daughter. During her college years, I was astonished when an elderly widow in our church wrote to tell us how much she appreciated the cards and letters she’d been receiving from Joy. I didn’t have a clue that my daughter had reached out to the woman.
