A program started by Apostle James Green, pastor of Soul Winners Apostolic Overcoming Holy Church of God, provides a pathway for locals to get a high school equivalency diploma.
The church is located at 900 Hood Road on the former Fort Wolters base.
Green, who focused much of his ministry on youth when he lived in Florida, said he felt God led him to this area.
He said he had never even heard of Mineral Wells when the opportunity arose for him to lead a church here.
According to Green, he was living in Arlington when he first learned about the community and had the keys to the church just two days later.
Since arriving in Mineral Wells, Green said he has been working with the Mineral Wells Police Department and the adjunct 4th Responders program coordinated by local ministerial leaders.
After recognizing a need to serve those in the community without high school diplomas, Green said he worked toward establishing his church as an accredited school and worked with city leaders to establish the program.
He said the last step, computer delivery, should take place by next week.
Though the school does charge students to help cover its accreditation costs, Green said, "We are trying to find a way to get grants for people who can't afford it."
He said some of his previous outreach included leading youth on trips to prison in an effort to show them negative choices have real consequences.
