Cousins are usually the first friends we have as children. No one will ever understand your crazy family the way your cousins do, even if you haven’t talked in a while. Cousins share your history. The history of your family. They are your link to your past.
This is especially true for those of us who have no siblings. I believe I’ve told you that not only am I an only child, and my mother was also an only child. So I didn’t even have close first cousins on her side.
My father was one of eight, and those eight produced only eight children, so I had seven first cousins. Of those, two are now gone and one is mentally ill. The first to die was quite a bit older than I, and the main thing I remember about her was that her husband rode a motorcycle which I was not allowed to ride (but I did anyway, once) and her husband played the pedal steel guitar.
The other cousin who died was quite a bit younger than I, but we were fairly close as children. I sometimes was allowed to stay at his home as a teenager.
