Slow times out Perrin way, but a lot of coughing

By Kay Mealio

I didn't write a news article last week, mostly because I had no news. Either everyone in town is like us, coughing and sneezing, or there was really a dead time in Perrin.

I know at the Church of Christ Sunday was the monthly first Sunday fellowship meal and attendance was down a lot. Neither Fred nor I felt good and didn't attend, and it was reported that very few were at church or stayed for the meal.

I'm hoping that the weathermen get it right and we receive that rain they've been promising. At this time (Wednesday evening), we have had a couple of good showers and about 1 3/4” of rain. I think if we'd get a really good hard rain and a few days of steady weather, everyone would start feeling better and get well.

The Jack County Youth Fair was Jan. 9-12; for this event school was out on Friday. Students hardly have time to adjust back to the school schedule when they get out of school early on Thursday, Jan. 10 and are out for the Jack Co. Youth Fair on Friday.

The school's first semester ends on Friday, Jan. 18. Semester Exams are Thursday, Jan. 17 and Friday, Jan 18. The Exam Schedule: for periods 1-4 on Thursday, and 5-8 on Friday. Break and lunches will be at the same time as the regular schedule.

The third Saturday of each month there will be a canned food distribution at the Advent Christian Church located at 300 S. Marks St., Perrin. The food is provided by the County Probation Office and distributed throughout the county. There are no requirements to receive food except it is for people who live in the Perrin area or live in the Perrin-Whitt CISD. The monthly Food Distribution at the Perrin Advent Christian Fellowship Hall will be Saturday, Jan. 19 from 9 to 11. Enter at the North side of the church. For more information, contact Debra Tillery.

I received a note from Bob Garrett of Warda, Texas. He and his wife Altha were wishing everyone in the Perrin area a happy new year. Bob graduated from Perrin as one of a class of 13 at PHS in 1951. He is in good health despite going through heart surgery at Texas Heart Institute - St. Luke’s in Houston Oct. 1 to replace a leaking aorta valve. The surgery was successful and his recovery has been going fine. He and his wife Altha have been married since 2004, and live near Warda. They were both living in The Woodlands but after they married moved to a 160-acre farm with a small herd of cattle. Warda is a close-knit (mostly Lutheran) community smaller than Perrin, located halfway between La Grange and Giddings on US 77. Bob's parents were Bill and Louise Garrett and they lived 4 miles southwest of Perrin.

There will be a Chili/Salsa Cook-Off at the First Baptist Church in Perrin on Sunday, Jan. 27 at 6 pm. This is a Fund Raiser for their Youth.

Class favorites were chosen at the school and the elementary results were sent to me. Pre-K Sophie Dallas & Nic Hinkle, Kindergarten- Leddy Hill & Jackson Gray, 1st -Hannah Lindsey & Kolby Burke, 2nd -Jennifer Meister & Dylan Hinkle, 3rd -Alissa Dugan & McCain Beck, 4th -Jessica Blackman & Alex Rivera, 5th - Kelli Tucker & Justus Ehlenbach and 6th - Brianna Bryant & Colton Prestridge.
