Out & About in Perrin

Be aware that the Donkey Basketball game is scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 2, in the Perrin High School Gym. Tickets on sale now; contact the high school office or any senior. Tickets are $6 each and children under 5 FREE. If you wait until the 2nd, tickets will be $8 at the gate.

Perrin FFA members Jake Hall and Mary Oleksyn qualified and attended the State Leadership Development Event Contest held at Sam Houston State University, Nov. 30 and Dec 1. Mary, receiving a State Semi- Finalist plaque, participated in Jr. Creed Speaking and placed 6th in her heat. Jake participated in Sr. Creed Speaking, placing 4th in his heat, which qualified him for the finals. Jake competed against the top 10 other students in the state and finished with a 5th place State Banner. Texas has one of the toughest LDE contests in the country. In 2012, 646 Jr. Creed Speaking and 678 Sr. Creed Speaking students started the process at the district level, two of which advanced to the Area Contest across the state. After the 10 Area Contests, two students advanced to the State LDE Contest totaling 20 students. Both Mary and Jake ranked in the top 3 percent across the state of Texas.

Perrin-Whitt Class Favorites for 2012-13 are: Pre K-Sophie Dallas & Nic Hinkle; Kindergarten- Leddy Hill & Jackson Gray; 1st - Hannah Lindsey & Kolby Burke; 2nd - Haley Meister & Dylan Hinkle; 3rd - Alissa Dugan & McCain Beck; 4th - Jessica Blackman & Alex Rivera; 5th - Kelli Tucker & Justus Ehlenbach; 6th - Brianna Bryant & Colton Prestridge; 7th - Faith Butler & Shawn Welch; 8th - Samantha Vick & Eddie Brock; 9th - Maddison Richardson & Chase Akin; 10th - Leslie Burwell, & Creede Lee; 11th - Makaila Brooks & Caleb Brock & 12th - Katie Birdwell & Forest Francis.

On Jan. 29, Perrin-Whitt will host a FAFSA workshop for all interested seniors and their parents. The FAFSA is the Application for Federal Student Aid used by colleges and universities to determine eligibility for financial aid, including grants, educational loans, and work-study programs. The information presented is relevant to any senior who will be attending college next year. The meeting will be held in the library beginning at 6 p.m. Seniors, are asked to drop by Mrs. Cooper’s office to sign up for this important informational session.

The third Saturday of each month there will be a canned food distribution at the Advent Christian Church located at 300 S. Marks St., Perrin. The food is provided by the County Probation Office and distributed throughout the county. There are no requirements to receive food except it is for people who live in the Perrin area or live in the Perrin-Whitt CISD. The monthly Food Distribution at the Perrin Advent Christian Fellowship Hall will be Saturday, Jan. 19, from 9 to 11. Enter at the north side of the church. There will be a Chili/Salsa Cook-Off at the First Baptist Church in Perrin on Sunday, Jan. 27, at 6 p.m. This is a fundraiser for their youth.

Thought for the week: Society will ignore almost any form of public behavior except getting in the express line with two extra items.

    Graham Dennis Stowell was born April 9 at 7:54 a.m. at Sky Ridge Medical Center in Lonetree, Colo. Graham weighed 5 lbs. 11 oz. and was 18.5” long. His parents are Dennis and Sherri-Jo (Keener) Stowell of Aurora, Colo. Sherri-Jo is originally from Perrin.

    Claude Renfro, 83, of Weatherford passed away Thursday, April 11. The service was last Monday at Bluebonnet Hills.

    Congratulations to Jack County Spelling Bee winner Kent Withaeger. Kent is in sixth grade at Perrin-Whitt Elementary. He won the Jack County spelling bee on Wednesday, Feb. 13, by spelling the word “pretzel.” Kent will represent Jack County on March 20 at the Regional Spelling Bee, held at Texas Christian University.

    The varsity basketball girls will be going on to the playoffs. I’m not sure when or where they will be playing. Their final regular game will be Tuesday, at Poolville. The boy’s varsity will play their last game Feb. 8 at Ranger.
