Dr. A.T. (Thurston) Koonce Jr.

Mineral Wells Index

Dr. A.T. (Thurston) Koonce Jr., 79, died June 30, 2012.    

Graveside service is 10 a.m. Friday, July 6, at Woodland Park Cemetery in Mineral Wells. 

A beloved father and member of the community, Dr. Koonce resided in Millsap. He was born Nov. 30, 1932. Dr. Koonce graduated from the University of Texas with a degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery. He served in the Army from 1955 to 1957. Dr. Koonce started his dental practice in Mineral Wells in 1957, where he practiced for over 40 years before retiring. He was involved in the community serving on the board of directors of the Mineral Wells ISD, a member of the Palo Pinto County Sherriff's Posse, Palo Pinto County Reserve Deputy Officers, Mineral Wells Bass Club, Mineral Wells Lions Club and other service organizations. He was an emergency medical technician (EMT) and started the EMT programs at Weatherford College and Tarleton State University. He had a brown belt in karate. Dr. Koonce was an avid hunter and fisherman, an outdoorsman who deeply enjoyed nature and travel.

Dr. Koonce is survived by his daughter, Criseyda Koonce and her husband, Bill Ervin, and Bill's children, Jacob, Ashaun and Laura; and daughter-in-law, Ginger Sanford and her children, Ginnefer, Lauren, Alaina, Brenda and Daniel.

He was preceded in death by his father, A. T. (Thurston) Koonce Sr.; mother, Laura Koonce; sons, Gaylen Koonce and Lars Sharpe; wife, Lillie Koonce; and fiancé, Sandra Mulkey.
