STEPHENVILLE – Walter J. Shepard, 87, died Friday, Feb. 10, 2012, at the Oakwood Assisted Living complex in Stephenville, Texas.
After a brief eulogy given by his step son-in-law, Gary Henderson, Walter was laid to rest beside his parents, John and U. Zadie Shepard, on Sunday morning Feb. 12, at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Graham, Texas. Stephenville Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Walter proudly served his country as a U.S. Navy medic during World War II. He did such a great job, the ship's doctor wanted him to go to medical school to become a doctor, but his love was in electronics, so after his service in the Navy ended, he learned to repair TVs, stereos and radios.
In the 1950s he opened his shop, Shepard's TV Service, in Mineral Wells, and operated it for over 30 years. His shop was located in the old Piggly Wiggly and S&H Green Stamp building, then later he moved it to South Oak Avenue a few buildings south the police station, where he worked until retirement.
One of the favorite memories of each of his grandchildren was sitting on his lap and playing with the little tools he carried in his shirt pocket. He was well known for his honesty and kindness, not only in his life, but in his work ethic as well. During the 1960s Walter also enjoyed bowling in leagues for many years at the Mountaineer Lanes.
In 1988 Walter met his second wife, Alta "Tay" Cook, and married her in December of that year. A few years later they moved to Stephenville, where they lived for the last 15 years. They were both members of the Baptist church. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle. He was loved by many and will be deeply missed.
Walter is survived by his wife, Tay Shepard, of Stephenville; two daughters, Janice Beam, of Georgia, and Deborah Connell Burns, of Arkansas; two sons, James Shepard, of South Carolina, and Ray Shepard Vannoy, of Mineral Wells; granddaughters, Renee Beam, of Alabama, Paige Beam and her daughter, Alita, of Georgia, Jannean Glover, of Arkansas, and her son, Joey Nickols, of Rowlett, Texas, and Connie and Phyllis Shepard, of South Carolina; grandsons, Matthew Connell, of Fort Worth, and James Shepard Jr., of South Carolina; stepchildren, Tommy Brown, Bennie Henderson and Sandra Johnson and their families; and many nieces and nephews as well as friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John H. and U. Zadie Shepard; three brothers, George, Elmer and John Henry Jr.; and two sisters, Rosie Manley and Lila Mae Grimes.
