MILLSAP – A very special event made for some wonderful memories, with all of the participation and activity that surrounded the Community Christmas Celebration.
While the weather didn’t cooperate very well, spirits were nonetheless high. The setting was wet and frosty and the atmosphere full of fun and warmth, with the City Council doing a great job of hosting. People from surrounding towns came in for the event, and some commented on how wonderful everything was. The food was great and the cabins looked spectacular, with it seeming all magical for the kids. It was a very special night, and the many efforts that it took to make it all possible are greatly appreciated.
The fundraiser for Rayne Newby, who made front page Index news as the victim of very serious burns, was a great success. It coincided with junior high basketball games, and cars were parked for blocks around. Needless to say the turnout was fantastic, with a silent auction, T-shirts for sale, and the spaghetti dinner all taking place to help this Middle School student and his family. I asked some of Rayne’s friends to tell us what they wanted, everyone to know about him. The responses were “one of a kind” and “lights up a room.” When I asked friends of this young man’s mother, Carrie Larkin, to tell me about the family it was easy to see why there is such support for them. The consensus was that Carrie is a caregiver from the bottom of her heart to everyone who comes her way, and that by supporting the family friends think that they are just paying it forward. Reports from Rayne’s mother
are that he is alert and talking, and skin graft surgery will be taking place. We wish Rayne a steady recovery as he will likely have a very lengthy stay in Parkland Hospital in Dallas.
The elementary school students have been learning a lot about animals with a special program presented by the Bird Lady, Doris Magar, who is founder of a nonprofit organization that educates about birds of prey. She brought her birds and knowledge to share, and it was a very exciting time for the kids.
Another activity that is teaching some of the kids about animals is a weekly presentation, Wild Kingdom, led by Dr. Dene Herbel for MAP students. In conjunction with this activity, the Fort Worth Zoo Wild Wonders Program is bringing out some animals and presenting a program to the kids. What
innovative ways to educate children!
The MAP Parent Program is inviting the community to a 13-week program titled “Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University.” This will be led by Michael Humphrey and the goal is to think differently about money and learn better management skills. Orientation is Jan. 9 at 6 p.m. in the elementary cafeteria. There is a $25 fee for materials, and any questions may be directed to Mr. Humphrey at mhumphrey@millsapisd.net. With the economy tight, anything we can learn about how to get the greatest benefit from our money is a worthwhile endeavor.
You may want to mark your calendars: The Millsap School District will have early release on Dec. 19 and 20; Christmas break is Dec. 21-Jan. 3; and teacher workday is Jan. 4. We know the kids and school personnel are looking forward to this vacation, and we hope it’s great for every one of them!
A reminder, the band/choir concert is Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. at the high school. It’s always beautiful, so go if you can!
