Millsap Matters:

Health Fair, Millsap trustees and ‘get well soon’ wishes

By SHARRON HUDSON

MILLSAP – With fairly mild winter temperatures moving us out of January, plans by some of our area organizations are in the works for events in February. Among these is the third annual Millsap Community Health Fair, sponsored by the Millsap School Health Advisory Council.

The fair will take place Thursday, Feb. 21, 5:30-8 p.m., at Millsap High School. The overall purpose is to share information with the community about how to have better health and establish healthy habits. To help with this endeavor dentists, chiropractors, optometrists and nurses will be on site. There will be eye checkups, blood pressure checks and flu shots available. Booths include those about pet health, heart health, poison control and community events.

There will also be door prizes and a theme-basket raffle. The MHS junior class will be having a baked-potato supper in conjunction with the fair, in the high school cafeteria. The cost of dinner is $6 for adults and $4 for kids 9-years old and under. This is a great way to spend some time taking care of one our most important assets and the fair is free of charge.

In a real outpouring of concern and care the Millsap Elementary came together recently for a garage and bake sale for Mr. and Mrs. Wayne Hubik. As has been written, Mr. Hubik, our Elementary Principal, had back surgery in August and has been too ill to work since then. Mrs. Hubik, who also works in the school district, has been unable to work because she must care for him.

The community has reached out and really come together to help the couple and this happened again in a big way, with a multitude of folks affiliated with the elementary all pitching in, to make the fundraiser a great success. The Hubik family sends a hearty thanks to all who helped with the event.

Cash donations can be made to an account set up through Comanche National Bank branches in Cool and Millsap. Our hopes are that Mr. Hubik recovers soon, so hang in there Mr. and Mrs. Hubik!

As January was School Board Appreciation Month – as recognized by the state of Texas – the Millsap ISD school board was given well-deserved honors and accolades by the community and schools. All three schools’ staff and students honored the board members, with the elementary making a presentation to them and the middle and high school Beta Clubs recognizing these dedicated, elected volunteers.

The school board’s job is to establish a vision for the education program, design a structure to achieve that vision, assure the schools are accountable to the community and strongly advocate continuous improvement in students’ learning and the programs. This all entails a myriad of duties and countless hours of work. Those on the Millsap school board have all dedicated themselves to these goals for a number of years. Our board members, with their years of service, are: President Dr. Dene Herbel, 13 years; Vice President Mike Stack, eight years; Secretary Jerry Walker, nine years; Christy Burton, five years; Paul Evans, four years; Tommy Lucia, six years; and Alan Richardson, five years.

Hope each of you enjoyed being honored and much thanks for your hard work for the good of Millsap ISD.

Something new to Millsap is the Cup a Hope Coffee House, located at the Millsap First Baptist Church. It is open Tuesday mornings 8:30-10 a.m., with plenty of coffee and conversation available. For those facing difficult life questions and situations this place offers care and help. It’s great to have this ministry available right here in our community, so if you need someone to listen or talk with you will be very welcome to come in. Welcome, and many blessings Cup a Hope.

A couple of ladies very dear to many in the area are under the weather. Mrs. Wanda Boyd has been ill and we wish her a Get Well Soon! Mrs. Johnnie Doan recently underwent a very lengthy surgery and we hope she has a speedy recovery!

The Millsap Neighborhood Ladies Home and Garden Club ask that everyone be reminded of the upcoming Spaghetti Supper Fundraiser. It will be at the Millsap Community Center, Feb. 9, 4-8 p.m. All the food is made from scratch and will be $7 a plate with carryout available. There will be a “Sweet Shoppe” and door prizes. Looking forward to it!

Thanks for reading!
