SPRINGTOWN – Mineral Wells High School soccer teams completed a sweep of Springtown as the Rams cruised to a 5-1 victory and the Lady Rams won in shutout fashion, 5-0, here Tuesday night in a pair of District 12-4A matches.
Gilbert Castorena scored three goals for the Rams (6-2-1) while adding an assist. Zachary Gray and Omar Hernandez each added a goal.
Roy Gomez recorded two assists, with Bryan Flores and Gerardo Moya each adding a helper.
“The boys have been playing good and we are focusing on one game at a time,” Rams head coach Rolando Borjon said. “We have a big game here at home against Azle on Friday.
“We have five games left and everything is open; no one is guaranteed a spot yet. We are just hoping to focus and play our hearts out each game.”
The current boys’ standings show Azle leading 12-4A with 22 points, with Aledo second (21), Mineral Wells third (19) and Brewer (16) fourth. The top four teams qualify for the Class 4A playoffs.
In fifth place is Saginaw with 15 points, followed by Boswell (10), Springtown (3) and Saginaw Chisholm Trail (0).
The Lady Rams (5-3-1) scored four goals in the first half and added another in the second.
Sami Stevens scored a pair of goals to lead the Lady Rams. Also scoring were Gabi Lazo, Breanna Hinojos and Emily Clingings.
Kaleigh Aaron led the Lady Rams with two assists, with Molly Clarke adding a helper.
Goalkeepers Brittany Smith and Rebecca Langley shared the shutout.
