When the final buzzer sounded Friday afternoon, members of the Strawn Greyhounds didn't celebrate wildly. As sweet as the win was, it was only the latest in a series of steps toward their ultimate goal – a return trip to the state finals.
Strawn will face its last hurdle in its quest to return to the championship game this Friday when they face the Calvert Trojans in the state Division I semifinal round. The two teams are scheduled to play at 7:30 p.m. at Glen Rose's Tiger Stadium.
Strawn rolls into the contest with plenty of momentum. The Greyhounds have won all three of their playoff games with ease, Now 12-1 overall, the 'Hounds have outscored their opposition by a 196-50 clip in the postseason.
Against Richland Springs, the Greyhounds rallied from an early 8-0 deficit to outscore the Coyotes by a 70-14 margin over the final 16 minutes of the game.
Calvert, 11-0, also comes into the game on a high note. The Trojans upset Abbott, 54-36, on Friday. The win was a measure of revenge for Calvert, which suffered a loss to Abbott last year in the state quarterfinals.
Calvert, which opened the postseason with a bye in the first round, advanced to the quarterfinals with a 61-19 win over Penelope.
The winner of Friday's semifinal showdown will advance to face either Garden City or Follett in the Division I six-man state championship game.
A year ago, Strawn defeated Follett, 58-29 in the finals.
