Even though it is only Week 6 of the Mineral Wells Rams' football season, there may not be a bigger game on the schedule than tonight's showdown with the Boswell Pioneers. With a "Murderer's Row" of squads ahead, Mineral Wells desperately needs a win to remain in the thick of the postseason race.
The Rams, coming off a thrilling win over Springtown last week, head into the game in a four-team tie for third in the district standings. One of the teams they are tied with is Boswell.
The Pioneers, 3-2 overall and 1-1 in district play, roll into the contest looking for a bit of momentum. Boswell suffered a tough 38-12 loss to Aledo last week.
The Pioneers have one of the area's top quarterbacks calling the shots for their high-powered spread-style offense. Quinton Gregory is currently fourth among Class 4A passers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area in total yards with 891 yards. He has thrown 13 touchdowns in the team's first five games.
With Gregory at the helm, the Pioneers have moved the ball almost at will this season, averaging just under 400 yards per outing.
Among Gregory's favorite targets are senior wide receiver Jacob Stone and Justin Fritsch. Stone has snagged 27 passes this fall for 312 yards and five scores.
As a team, the Pioneers have averaged more than 30 points per game.
Unfortunately for the Boswell fans, the BHS defense hasn't played as well. The Pioneers have allowed more than 350 yards and more than three scores per outing.
That could be good news for a Rams offense that hit stride last week. Mineral Wells enters tonight's game averaging more than 350 yards and almost 30 points per contest.
Tonight's game is scheduled to get under way at 7:30 p.m. in Boswell.
