Soccer Lady Rams take two wins at tournament

MINERAL WELLS — STAFF REPORTS

FORT WORTH – Playing in their final tournament before District 12-4A play begins next week, the Mineral Wells Lady Rams went 2-1 last weekend at the Brewer tournament, with the one loss coming in a shootout.

The Lady Rams (5-2) defeated Diamond Hill, 3-0, in their final tournament match.

The MWHS ladies had opened the tournament with a 4-1 win over Denton Guyer junior varsity, and Boswell, a district opponent, beat the Lady Rams 1-0 in a shootout.

“Our defense, which includes goalie Rebecca Langley and defenders Emily Clingings, Mason Malone, Jessica Baeza and Erin McGuire allowed only one goal in regulation play (in the tournament),” Lady Rams head coach John Tuggle said. “We felt like we outplayed all of our opponents.

“We had opportunities to score on Boswell, yet could not find the back of the net.”

The Lady Rams ended the tournament with 20 points.

The final point earners were Denton Guyer with 28 points, followed by Azle (27), Boswell (25), North Forney (22), and Mineral Wells (20).  The top 4 teams in points went on to the champions bracket.

Against Diamond Hill, Juana Velasquez, Jessica Baeza and Molly Clarke each scored a goal. Miriam Garcia assisted on Velasquez’s goal, and Kylie Williams earned the assist on Baeza’s goal.

Clarke scored off an assist from Baeza.

The Lady Rams led 1-0 at the half and scored twice in the second half to secure the win and the shutout for Langley, who has a streak of four consecutive regulation halves of shutout goalkeeping.

“At this point,” Tuggle said, “we are pleased with our consistency on the field but know that we must improve to have a good showing in district play. “

The Lady Rams will travel to Burkburnett today in a match that begins at 6 p.m. to conclude pre-district play.

MWHS soccer notes

Both the Lady Rams and Rams begin District 12-4A Tuesday at home against Saginaw Chisholm Trail. The girls’ match will begin at 6 p.m. at Ram Stadium followed by the boys’ contest at 8 p.m.
