Unlike many athletes, who will fly to England for the Olympic Games with their equipment and teams, the preparation for Clark Montgomery and his teammates takes a bit more effort.
Eleven U.S. horses and nine equestrians have made the U.S. Eventing Federation team's 2012 Olympic short list, which includes Montgomery, 31, and his mount Loughan Glen, or “Glen,” for short.
Shipping an Olympic-caliber horse overseas is not simple task. Today Glen and his groom will ship across “the pond” via FedEx with the other U.S. team mounts, while Montgomery will fly over Monday night.
“At this point it's all coming down to soundness. Everybody crosses their fingers that they ship well to the UK,” he said, adding that some horses can succumb to shipping sickness among other potential problems. “You'd like to wrap them in bubble wrap.”
