MORAN - Izaac Velasquez rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown and Marty Berumen blocked a punt that led to another score on Thursday and powered the Strawn Greyhounds to a 56-8 win over the Moran Bulldogs in the regular-season finale for both squads.
With the win, Strawn clinched its 10th consecutive playoff berth, finishing the year at 6-4 and as the District 10-A runner-up.
The Greyhounds, which limited Moran to just three first downs and only 103 total yards, hit Moran hard early. Strawn scored on its first offensive play of the game on a 46-yard pass from Harrison Nowak to freshman Abram Jaramillo.
Four plays later, Berumen blocked Chico Trevino’s punt attempt. Grayson Brandenburg recovered the ball in the end zone for a TD.
Moran’s woes were far from through. Jaramillo intercepted an MHS pass and returned it 25 yards for a TD.
Jaramillo’s interception return gave Strawn a 22-0 lead despite having run only one offensive play from scrimmage in the first three minutes of the game.
Junior running back Cole Abbott closed out the ‘Hounds’ first-quarter barrage with a nine-yard TD romp.
The Greyhounds reeled off 22 unanswered points in the second and built a 50-0 lead with 24 seconds left in the half before Moran connected, scoring on a 15-yard pass with no time left on the clock.
Freshman Victor Hernandez closed out the SHS win in the third by catching a 15-yard pass from quarterback Owen Alison.
Strawn will face Lueders-Avoca in the bi-district round on Thursday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. in Throckmorton.
Wylie Prep 22, CCS 12
WYLIE – Wylie Prep outlasted the Community Christian School Warriors, 22-12, here Friday night in a first-round playoff game.
CCS ends the season with a 4-6 mark.
The Warriors committed five turnovers, including four interceptions, which contributed to the loss.
“We just shot ourselves in the foot,” CCS head coach Bryan Horton said. “We would drive down the field but have some kind of turnover or penalty that would cost us.
“I thought we played well defensively. Hold an opponent to 22 points in a six man game attests to that.”
Horton had a new quarterback, Bradley Norman, who the coach said “played well,” but the four interceptions were thrown on halfback passes – two each by Cole Van Kirk and Isaiah Brazeal.
“Bradley did well despite only practicing a couple of weeks at quarterback,” Horton said. “He gave us a chance to win.”
The Warriors took an early 6-0 lead when Van Kirk caught a 35-yard touchdown pass from Brazeal.
But Wylie Prep came back with a pair of touchdowns to take a 14-6 lead.
The Warriors cut the lead to 14-12 when Brazeal again hooked up with Van Kirk, this time on a 60-yard TD pass play.
Wylie Prep extended its lead to 20-12 and closed the scoring on a safety after an errant CCS snap.
Horton said his team fought through the adversity of losing two key starts and suffering several injuries during the season.
“This team showed a lot of heart all year long,” he said. “Bottom line, when you have just 10 kids and lose two starters for the season to injury it is hard to overcome. But the guys never quit and I am really proud of them and the way they fought.
“We are young, and we learned a lot this year and we can build on that.”
Throckmorton 72, Gordon 26
THROCKMORTON – State-ranked No. 2 Throckmorton scored early and often on its way to a 50-point win over Gordon which dashed the Longhorns’ playoff hopes.
Gordon finishes the season at 8-2 overall and 1-2 in District 9-A play.
“Our kids played hard, but we had trouble defending the deep pass,” Longhorns head coach Shane Mallory said. “We knew we would have to score a lot, but we just couldn’t keep up with them. They are a great team and ranked No. 2 for a reason.”
Pedro Lopez scored two touchdowns for the ‘Horns, including a TD reception from Michael Cherry. Jacob Wigington also had a pair of scores, including a TD reception from Emory Allen.
“We had a great year,” Mallory said. “Our junior high, junior varsity and varsity combined for a 25-3 record.”
Windthorst 56, Perrin 7
WINDTHORST – Windthorst scored the first 49 points on its way to a 56-7 win over the Perrin Pirates here Friday night in a District 8-A game.
Perrin finishes the season at 2-8 overall and 0-4 in district play.
Perrin’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 52-yard run by George Augilar, with Edgar Alonso booting the extra point.
In the opening quarter, Perrin's Bobby Price recovered a Windthorst fumble and the Pirates were in business on the Windthorst 39.
After a successful 12-yard pass from Justin Wilson to Josiah Cansler, the Pirates were looking to score first against state ranked Windthorst. Unfortunately, a pass to the 2-yard line was intercepted by Windthorst and the Pirate drive ended. Windthorst marched to ball down the field on 10 plays and 98 yards for the first score of the game.
The teams traded possessions to finish out the first quarter. The rest of the half belonged to Windthorst where the Trojans scored four more TDs to take a 35-0 lead at the half.
Windthorst scored two more times before the Pirates got on the board.
The Trojans added a TD late in the game.
Hico 35, Millsap 0
MILLSAP – Millsap finishes its season at 3-7 overall and 1-5 in District 4-2A play after falling to Hico, 35-0, here Friday night.
