Mineral Wells High School head coach Chuck Lawrence will be honored by Cumby Independent School District officials on Sept. 5 when the district's football stadium is named in honor of him and friend Rick Frazier.
Lawrence, a 1972 graduate of Mineral Wells High School, and Frazier broke into coaching in the late 1970s by taking over the Cumby coaching duties β all of them. Under their leadership, Cumby developed into a power and won the school's only district football championship.
Next Saturday, Cumby will rename Trojan Stadium by christening it Frazier-Lawrence Stadium prior to their first home football game against Union Hill. The renaming ceremony will be held at 2 p.m., prior to the Trojans game with Union Hill.
Frazier and Lawrence remained close friends even after leaving Cumby. The two later coached together against Cisco Junior College.
Frazier passed away in 2007. At his funeral, Lawrence told some of the Cumby school officials attending the service they should name the stadium after his friend.
Cumby officials agreed β with a twist. They wanted to put Lawrence's name on the field, too."
βIn Cumby, you didn't say the name Rick Frazier without saying Chuck Lawrence. You're going to name this after both of them or none of them," said former student and school board member Lou Ann Petty.
On Sept. 5, Cumby ISD officials plans to do just that.
