Lady Rams win; ready to settle score with Pojo

MINERAL WELLS — By TONY EIERDAM

Scoring the first 32 points of the game, Mineral Wells concluded a District 6-3A sweep of Fort Worth Diamond Hill as the Lady Rams glided past the Lady Eagles, 95-19, Tuesday night at the MWHS gym.

The win raises the Lady Rams’ overall record to 22-7 and 6-2 in district play.

Diamond Hill has shown improvement since the last time the two teams met, and  Lady Rams head coach Ed Shelstead said the Lady Eagles showed “a few wrinkles” that helped MWHS prepare for its next game – a key 6-3A contest at home Friday against Springtown in a showdown for second place.

“Diamond Hill did a couple of things against our defense that forced us to look at some things, and that helps prepare us for Friday (in a key district game against Springtown),” Shelstead said. “But you know, you have to give credit to the Diamond Hill kids.

“They never quit, they work hard and they have a good coach who is a very positive guy. And they did show us a couple of things that will help prepare us for Springtown.”

As in the last meeting, senior post Sydney Shelstead has her way with the Lady Eagles as she scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down 17 rebounds despite not playing in the fourth quarter.

But other Lady Rams had the opportunity to show their respective games as Ashlynn Robinson, Pam Hopkins and Riley Bullock were awarded extended minutes.

The trio took advantage of their extra court time. Robinson scored a season-high 11 points while grabbing six rebounds, Hopkins added eight points and Bullock finished with seven.

“We also got a chance to play everyone, which is good,” Shelstead said. “Ashlynn, Pam and Riley, a lot of times they have the toughest jobs because they don’t get a lot of minutes.

“But (Tuesday) was good because they got to play a lot. They get to utilize all of their hard work, and they played very well.”

Newcomer Bethany Allen also had a solid night from the field as she scored 15 points. The junior also did not see court time in the fourth quarter.

Sydney Shelstead scored 11 points in the first period with senior Niya Benavides adding eight, including a pair of three-pointers, as MWHS led 32-0 after the first quarter.

Diamond Hill did not score until the 6:14 mark of the second quarter.

After the Lady Eagles’ bucket that began the second period, the Lady Rams went on a 20-0 run – with half the points coming form inside the lane – to take a 52-2 lead at the half.

In the third period, Allen had eight of the Lady Rams’ 26 points, and Bullock scored five, including a trey from the left baseline, as MWHS took a 78-9 lead into the fourth quarter.
