Both the Mineral Wells Rams and Lady Rams basketball teams played in out-of-town tournaments this weekend, and the conclusion of those tournaments occurred after press time.
The Rams defeated Trinity Valley, 64-41, on Thursday in the Jacksboro tournament opener, but on Friday fell to Breckenridge, 54-44.
Ricky Scott led the Rams against with 18 points against Trinity Valley, with A.J. Williams adding 10. Against Breckenridge, Biren Clardy led the Rams with 15 points, with Scott adding 12 and Williams nine.
The Lady Rams defeated Meridian, 63-25, Thursday in the Italy tournament opener as Niya Benavides connected on five three-point buckets and Sydney Shelstead added 13 points and nine rebounds.
Also, Courtney Peña finished with 12 points.
On Friday, the Lady Rams defeated Maypearl, 52-50, to reach Saturday’s championship game.
Shelstead led the Lady Rams against Maypearl with 24 points, with Bethany Allen adding 10.
Also scoring for the Lady Rams were Benavides with eight points, Peña with six, and Natalie Ragland and Kennedy Shelstead, each with two.

Mineral Wells Track Club preparing for summer meets
With Mineral Wells High School head cross country/track coach Jackie Harvey instructing recent Rams and Lady Rams track greats Lorenzo Johnson, Adrian Colbert and Maricela Castillo, and recently, current MWHS trackster DaShawn Hicks, one could say that incredible talent was the reason these four athletes qualified at the state level, with Johnson and Colbert earning state championships.
