The Mineral Wells eighth-grade football teams swept Granbury in their respective season finales on Nov. 6.
8th A 36, Granbury 6
Christian Garcia intercepted three passes and Cameron Weiss scored on a 30-yard run and threw a 50-yard halfback pass to Garcia as the pair led the Mineral Wells Junior High Rams eighth-grade “A” team to a 36-6 win over Granbury on Nov. 6.
Weiss also caught a 25-yard TD pass from Trent Guinn. Levi Knowles had a touchdown run and two-point conversion run, and Dylan Dalhauser had a 60-yard interception return for a TD. Also, Guinn connected with Andy Garcia for a two-point conversion.
Also on defense, Angel Garcia had an interception
Coaches report that linebackers Stephon Sandoval and Knowles each received the “Big Hit Award.”
The Rams finish the season with a record of 4-4.
8th B 22, Granbury 8
On Nov. 6, K’Yondric Cotton and Ruben Castorena each had a rushing touchdown run to lead the Rams eighth-grade “B” team to a 22-8 win over Granbury.
Castorena and Cotton also each added two-point conversion runs.
Also, Lane Houston had a 15-yard touchdown pass to Cain Carroway.
Defensively, Jordan Carroll had a fumble recovery, and coaches praised linebackers Cody Royer and Justin Hearn for their play on defense
Coaches also named Cain Carroway as the “Big Hit Award” winner.
The Rams close out the season at 2-6.
8th C 14, Granbury 0
Oscar Ortiz scored a rushing touchdown and added a two-point conversion and Mark Cotton recorded a TD run to lead the Rams eight-grade “C” team to a 14-0 win over Granbury.
Defensively, Tristan Brown had a quarterback sack and a fumble recovery, and coaches praised linebackers Tyler Hubble and Joe Hipol for their play on defense. Coaches awarded Tristan Brown with the “Big Hit Award.”
The Rams finish the season at 6-2.
“This was an enjoyable football season for this eighth-grade group,” coach Robert Moreno said. “I can’t wait to see how much better they will become after this track and off-season.
“That is when football games are really won.”

With Mineral Wells High School head cross country/track coach Jackie Harvey instructing recent Rams and Lady Rams track greats Lorenzo Johnson, Adrian Colbert and Maricela Castillo, and recently, current MWHS trackster DaShawn Hicks, one could say that incredible talent was the reason these four athletes qualified at the state level, with Johnson and Colbert earning state championships.
