Three Duncanville Deputies pitchers handcuffed the Mineral Wells Steam baseball team in a 4-0 win on Wednesday at Pratt Field.
Duncanville starting pitcher Jim McGonigle and relief pitchers Peter Mendez and Dustin Rasco threw a three-hit shutout in the opening game of the second half of the Texas Collegiate League season.
McGonigle, 2-1, gave up three hits and had seven strike outs in seven innings.
Mendez and Rasco closed out the contest with back-to-back hitless innings.
The win moved Duncanville to 9-12 on the year. The loss ended a two-game Mineral Wells win streak and left the Steam with a 6-15 record.
Taylor Rogers, 1-2, started on the mound for Mineral Wells and absorbed the loss.
Rogers, who gave up three earned runs on five hits and five walks, chalked up eight strike outs in seven innings.
Alex Vanoeveren, who took over for Rogers on the mound in the eighth, had three strike outs and retired all six hitters he faced in order.
Duncanville got on the scoreboard with a pair of runs in the top of the second. Brent Harris singled and scored on a base hit by Taylor Krick while Matt Williams drew a walk and scored the second run of the inning on a Mineral Wells error.
Duncanville made the score 4-0 with two seventh-inning runs. Jimmy Commerota highlighted the Duncanville rally with a clutch two-out, two-run single.
Mineral Wells head coach Bernie Martinez said his team lacked energy.
“I thought Taylor (Rogers) competed pretty well. It just seemed like we were a little low on energy, I don’t know why,” Martinez said. “We had some opportunities but we didn’t capitalize on them.”
Martinez said his pitching staff is solid.
“I’m very proud of my pitching staff. They are pitching pretty well,” the coach said. “To win in this league you have to be ready to play every night.”
Notes ... Aaron Murphree, Ryan Goins and Bo Coffman, who belted a double, had the only Mineral Wells hits.
