GORDON – As just a sophomore, Harrison Nowak is already regarded by many as the best male basketball player to ever suit up for the Strawn High School Greyhounds.
Now he has the records to prove it.
Harrison scored a school-record 59 points on Friday evening and helped power the Greyhounds to a stunning 97-53 win over rival Gordon in a key District 17-A showdown in the Longhorn Gym.
With his effort, the 16-year-old established himself as Strawn’s all-time single-game leading in scoring, and also made sure he would hold the team’s all-time single-season scoring average record.
“I can’t believe I just saw that,” said senior Bobby Wells. “The guy is absolutely amazing.
“I don’t want to sound dumb, but Michael Jordan probably has a poster of Harry on his wall.”
Nowak was a one-man scoring machine against Gordon.
He pushed in 10 points in the first quarter, added 22 more in the second, and 15 in the third.
He closed out his effort with 13 in the final eight minutes.
With his 59-point performance, Nowak upped his point total to 357 in just 12 games. For the season, he is averaging 29.7 points per game.
How impressive is that total? Consider this, even should he be held scoreless in the Greyhounds’ final game (at home against Lingleville) on Tuesday, he would break the school’s single-season scoring average mark by more than five points.
Strawn’s previous mark for highest single-season scoring average was set in 2010 by Tommy Wells Jr., who poured in 22.3 points per game.
“I’m tickled Harrison broke the record,” said Wells, who is now attending Ranger College. “No one deserves to hold that record more than Harrison.
“Even when I did that, I told everyone Harrison would break it.”
Nowak, who set the single-season scoring mark last year with 484 points, almost broke the single-season average mark last year as a freshman, chalking up 22.3 points per game.
