Eleven area athletes earn state academic honors

Nine MWHS athletes, two Perrin volleyball players make all-state, all-academic lists

The Texas High School Coaches Association (THSCA) and the United States Marine Corp proudly announce the THSCA Academic All-State Football, Volleyball and Cross-Country teams for 2012-13.

The teams are selected by a point system that awards points for GPA, class rank and SAT or ACT score. The student/athletes are then placed on teams according to the number of points they have earned.

Five Rams – Jacoby Prestwood, Sean McGuire, Jarod Lenamon, Travis Mallory and A.J. Williams earned spots on the all-state, all-academic team.

Prestwood was  first-team selection in Class 3A, McGuire is on the second team, while Lenamon, Mallory and Williams earned honorable mentions.

The Texas Girls Coaches Association also released their all-state, all-academic teams.

Requirements include an overall GPA average of 94 or above for grades 9-11; must be a varsity participant or member of the support staff of that sport in good standing; and must be of good moral character.

Earning all-state, academic honors from the Mineral Wells Lady Rams volleyball team were Niya Benavides, Sydney Shelstead, Chandler Ortiz and Miranda Watkins.

Earning all-state, academic honors from the Perrin Lady Pirates volleyball team were Kelsey Hutton and Crystal Crisp.
