Lady Rams finish great volleyball season

Ram Tracking ... By Jerry Hamilton

The Mineral Wells Lady Rams volleyball team lost in the second round to Liberty Hill.

It was a great season as the Lady Rams made the playoffs for the second time in school history.

The Lady Rams opened the basketball season Tuesday against state-ranked Lipan.

Newcomer Sydney Shelstead had 25 points in the 56-46 loss. Look for the Lady Rams to be a much better team this season. District opponent Kennedale is ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.

Castorena new area rushing leader

With 135 yards against Springtown, Rams running back Gilbert Castorena has 1,476 rushing yards on the year. His newest totals makes him the No. 1 running back among Class 3A area leaders.

He has passed Gary Sherley to become the school’s No. 3 all time rusher. Only Kelvin Thompson and Henry Anders have rushed for more career yards in MWHS history.

Amazing

Local golfers Albert and Heidi Rincon have had a remarkable run this year as they have won 19 of 21 tournaments they entered.

The duo finished second and third their other two outings.

Recently at the Granbury Nutcracker Guys and Dolls, the local twosome shot a two-day total of 22-under to win by nine strokes.

Heidi was a member of the only state champion team in MWHS history, the 1984 girls golf team.

Last chance

To advance to the playoffs for the third straight year, the Rams will need to beat Kennedale and hope Castleberry wins over Lake Worth.

Kennedale is undefeated in district play. If the Rams do advance to the playoffs, it would be the first time in school history to qualify for the playoffs three years in a row.

Kennedale has series edge

The last time the two teams met, Kennedale came away with a 34-21 win in 2001.

Kennedale pulled out a 19-18 win in 2000. The Wildcats also won two other nail-biters in 1999 (11-7) and 1998 (15-14).

The two teams have met four times, with the Wildcats winning all four games.
