From Staff Reports
Mineral Wells head football coach Chuck Lawrence will put on a free football camp for boys who have completed grades 6-8.
The camp, with a daily session from 8:30-11 a.m., will run Monday through Wednesday at Ram Stadium.
Lawrence said the economy is one reason he chose to not charge for this summer's camp.
"We are hoping that without charging, that we can attract a few more to the camp," Lawrence said.
Lawrence said he wants to put campers through agility drills along with offense and defense drills to get the familiar with the system they will see during freshman and middle school football this fall.
"We will start with 30 minutes of agility and running drills, then we will do an hour of defense followed by an hour of offense," he said. "This gives us three days to work with our kids who will be playing middle school and freshman football before we get them in the fall.
"(For boys who have completed sixth grade) this will give them their introduction to Rams football."
Lawrence said defensive drills would focus on the proper techniques of tackling, and coaches will also work in coverages, footwork and base defense.
Offensively, the coaches will introduce campers to a few of the rams' base plays, and they will also work on catching, footwork, running with the ball and running pass routes.
"We want to teach everyone not only how we do things, but why we do them in a particular manner," Lawrence said. "We are looking forward to the camp."
