A rare 199-yard hole-in-one shot resulted in a Parker County man earning a $10,000 payday Saturday during a four-man scramble tournament at Holiday Hills Country Club.
Golf pro Bill McGaha said area businesses often sponsor specific holes during tournaments, noting Saturday’s prize-winning shot was sponsored by Holiday Inn Express.
“It is very common that a local business would sponsor the hole-in-one package,” McGaha said, though he explained a golfer winning such a prize is very rare.
David Rodawalt, of Azle, who knocked in the fateful shot on the course’s 10th hole, said he hasn’t hit a hole-in-one since 1975, explaining he has played golf for 44 years.
Though such an achievement is uncommon, he said he waited for the best possible opportunity to accomplish the task.
Rodawalt said he had a good feeling about the shot as soon as he struck the ball with a 3-iron club.
“It was a good, well-struck shot, right down the center of the green,” he recalled. “The ball hit probably 20 or 30 feet short of the hole and rolled right in.”
He said he doesn’t play the game as much as he used to, explaining he was invited to the tournament by some friends and decided to take part in it.
McGaha said he has not seen a golfer win a larger prize in his 18 years at Holiday Hills.
“I’ve seen a couple of people before win a golf cart or a vacation,” he said, “but not $10,000.”
