Have a healthy 2010 through exercise programs at the senior center
Physical health is taking the forefront at the Senior Center these days. There are several opportunities for maintaining our bodies, led by those in the know.
Brenda Lee has long been a practicing advocate for senior citizens’ well being. She is highly visible, several times a week, advising, helping, encouraging and working our old bodies into shape, along with Nancy Martin and the Silver Sneakers. Together they promote muscular strengthening, greater range of motion and a recently initiated exercise regimen, called Cardio Circuit. Sounds like something you could put your heart into, doesn’t it? If you have no other reason for utilizing the resources of the center, then surely you can see the benefits inherent in this area. Check it out!
First thing on Monday morning, the 11th, at 10 a.m., the Silver Notes will make a visit to Mineral Wells Nursing Center to do their best to interest and entertain the residents at that establishment. Of course, with the chill in the air, and maybe, snow on the ground, it is possible that the singers may be few, so if you would like to join a great group of folks who like to sing and enjoy an uplifting activity, come and join them each Monday morning. They will welcome you with open arms, hearts and mouths.
Tuesday the 12th, from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m., the nice folks from the Mineral Wells Medical Supply and the nurses from PPGH Home Health will make their monthly visit to the center. They will check blood pressure, pulse and weight, then take a look at your blood sugar level. If they find anything out of the ordinary, they will give you written evidence of such testing results that you may want to take to your family physician. There is no charge for this service and could be a very valuable help, whether they find something to look at further, or simply find that you are a normal senior citizen. Either way, you win! The center and participants owe these health volunteers a large debt of gratitude for their service and care.
Two very different, important and engaging activities occur on Wednesday mornings at the center. Cathy Torres, geriatric social worker, and good friend to the elderly, will be on hand, beginning at 9:00 a.m., for an all-day visit to share informational resources with care-givers and seniors regarding various assistance available. Don’t forget to make an appointment in advance. The second activity, often thought of as most important, is the weekly Bingo Game. Now that won’t last all day, but it will give you a lot of fun while you are waiting for your appointment with Ms. Torres. Bingo stops with Eddie Gilly’s music and lunch.
Patricia Pilgrim, R.N., will do her acupressure work – by appointment, remember – on Friday, the 15th, from 9:30 a.m. to noon. If you have never tried this offer, then this week is a good time to start, and you have enough time to make an appointment if you go to the telephone right now and call the center office at 325-6470. Do it now!
Don’t forget that the annual garage sale is coming up in early March.
