Zakia Winegeart and Jamie Heflin post turned in double-digit performances Tuesday morning and led the Strawn High School Lady Greyhounds to a 56-35 win over Keene in non-district action.
With the win, Strawn upped its season record to 9-8 heading into Saturday's showdown with longtime district rival Gordon.
Making her first appearance on the court since being bitten by a spider two weeks ago, Winegeart poured in a game-high 23 points. Heflin finished with 15 points and a team-high 14 rebounds.
Strawn, which has played much of the lost month without several starters, got off to a slow start against Keene. The Lady 'Hounds narrowly escaped the first eight minutes with a lead, needing a late shot for a 12-11 edge.
Winegeart and Heflin began taking control from there. The two powered Strawn to a 13-6 run in the second and guided the Lady 'Hounds into the half holding a 25-17 lead.
Strawn all but iced the game with a dominating effort in the third quarter. They outscored Keene by an 18-2 clip in the frame and took a 43-19 cushion into the final frame.
Chy Ann Boston and Tiffany Lee also played well for Strawn. Boston contributed eight points and eight rebounds, while Lee chalked up three points and a team-high six assists.
