Seven sets of brothers lead Greyhounds into state championship showdown with Garden City
STRAWN – In Palo Pinto County six-man football history the number seven is indeed lucky.
Since the small-school version of football began in Texas in 1938, seven teams, including this year's version of the Strawn Greyhounds, from Palo Pinto County have advanced to their respective state championship games.
Since the University Interscholastic League began crowning six-man state champions in 1972, only seven teams have managed to repeat as state champions. Strawn could join that list Saturday with a win over Garden City. The two teams are scheduled to play for the Division I six-man title beginning at 7 p.m. at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
The most important "seven" this season for the Greyhounds are the seven brother combinations that help make up the Greyhounds' program. Of Strawn's 31 players and managers, 14 are brothers.
"It's kind of cool having that," said freshman Jacob Sharp, the younger brother of running back J.T. Sharp. "It's pretty incredible for us (the younger players) to be on the same team."
J.T. Sharp, one of the Greyhounds' top rushers this fall, is a junior this season. The two are the sons of Danny and Laura Sharp of Strawn.
Sharp isn't the only running back to have a brother on hand. Senior Trey Doyle is joined on the SHS roster by his younger brother, sophomore Aaron Doyle.
Trey is the team's top rusher this year. Aaron was the Greyhounds' junior varsity kicker before being sidelined with a knee injury.
The Doyles, who were both born in Mineral Wells, are the sons of Curt and Holly Doyle of Strawn.
"It's awesome having them both on the sideline," said Holly. "It's been kind of hard on Aaron because he can't play, but as parents we are very proud of both of them."
Nicky Miller, like Jacob Sharp, has a prime seat on the sideline to watch his older brother, James, gun for a second state ring. A seventh grader at Strawn Junior High, Nicky Miller serves as a manager for the Greyhounds.
The Millers, who were both born in Mineral Wells, are the sons of Danny and Jody Miller.
Tommy Wells Jr. and Bobby Wells add to the 'Hounds' list of brothers. A senior, Tommy is a quarterback/safety. He is making his third straight trip to the state playoffs, having been a member of the Loraine High School team that ended a 14-year playoff drought in 2007.
Bobby is a freshman running back and linebacker.
"It's pretty neat being on the same team as him," said Bobby. "He won't be able to lie to me about how good he was when we get older."
The Wells brothers – along with their sister, Kayme, were born in Eastland but grew up in Alaska, They are the children of Tommy and Pattie Wells.
James Miller, Trey Doyle, J.T. Sharp and Tommy Wells were all members of the Greyhounds' state title win a year ago. Miller is Strawn's starting offensive and defense end.
Angel and Marty Berumen spent much of the season playing together on the Greyhounds' JV program before being moved up for the playoffs.
The chance to play with his brother is one Angel enjoys.
"I'm kind of glad we are on the same team," he laughed. "At least now if he makes me mad, I can hit him at practice."
"When we get older, it will be something we can talk about. Plus, if we can both get rings that would be awesome," he said.
Angel, a freshman running back, and Marty, a sophomore running back rush specialist, are the sons of Marty and Sharon Berumen.
The Berumen's are joined on the Strawn roster by cousins, Luis and Sebastian Berumen. Luis is a freshman quarterback.
A seventh-grader, Sebastian serves as a varsity manager for the Greyhounds. He played running back this past season on the SJHS squad.
Luis and Sebastian, who were born in Eastland, are the sons of Maria Luevano and Luis Berumen.
The 'Hounds' roster also sports the services of Ross and Owen Allison, the sons of Alan and Tamara Allison.
Born in Lyons, Kan., Owen is a freshman end. Ross, a sixth grade running back, is one of the Greyhounds' four managers.
