Collision kills elderly Perrin man

PALO PINTO COUNTY – An 81-year-old Perrin man was killed late Saturday morning after his vehicle struck the rear of a mower deck pulled by a farm tractor.

William Maurice Mitchell was pronounced dead at the scene by Justice of the Peace Bobby Hart, according to information provided by the Texas Department of Public Safety.

The wreck occurred about 11:55 a.m. on U.S. Highway 281 North, 5.6 miles north of Mineral Wells.

According to investigating DPS Trooper Adrian Briseno, Mitchell was the driver and lone occupant of a 2005 Kia Sorento traveling northbound on U.S. 281. The Sorento struck the back of a shredder pulled by a 2008 John Deere farm tractor that was also northbound driving along the shoulder of U.S. 281.

Briseno reported Mitchell’s vehicle went airborne and rolled, coming to rest on its roof.

Mineral Wells fire, EMS and rescue personnel were called to the scene.

Mitchell was reportedly not wearing a seat belt, however was not ejected from the Sorento.

The driver of the tractor, Rusty Dalton, of Lubbock, Texas, was wearing a seat belt and was not injured, according to the report.

Mitchell was a heavy equipment operator providing farm, ranch, and soil conservation services in Jack and surrounding counties. He was also a rancher and successful local businessman. He and his wife, the late Frances Mitchell, built Mitchell RV Park in Perrin, which they operated until 1997.
