Fallin to run for treasurer; other candidates file papers
So far four Palo Pinto County residents have taken the first step to become candidates for the 2010 county election by filing their “appointment of campaign treasurer” declaration.
Most recently a not-so-newcomer to county elected offices took the first step before becoming a prospective candidate for county office.
Lone Camp resident Tanya Fallin has said she will run for Palo Pinto County treasurer on the Republican ticket.
She served as county treasurer for 12 years, from 1987 to 1999. She said she ran for three terms and stepped down.
In her 10 years away from the job, Fallin went overseas several times doing ministry, worked as an office manager at a Possum Kingdom Lake stonework business and most recently, for the past five-plus years, was a Barnett Shale land man for Mineral Wells-based Shafer Oil and Gas Properties.
She also managed a tour of England’s Tracey Elliot-Reep, who rode two horses through America. Fallin said she maintains a Web page, tanyasquilts.com, to hone her writing skills and share her love for quilts.
But now she’s coming back to local politics.
“I’m excited to come back into the game,” she said. “When I came into office, [the county was] broke and hand to borrow money. In 12 years there was a major turnaround. When I left we had a $2 million surplus.
“I know we are in difficult times again in our nation and I’m excited to give my service to the county again,” she added.
Fallin said her ancestors helped start Palo Pinto County, starting with I.W. Price, the first tax assessor-collector, who, she said, rode horseback to Austin to deliver tax collections. Her grandfather was a justice of the peace about 100 years ago.
“I have lots of heritage in PPC and have a great love of this county. We have a beautiful county and great natural resources an I want the people of PPC to all prosper,” she said.
Fallin’s declaration means she will be challenging Democratic incumbent Mary Motley in the 2010 general election. Motley has stated her plans to seek re-election.
In Fallin’s previous terms, she ran as a Democrat.
“The reason I’m changing, I have personal convictions that line up with the Republican platform,” she explained. “I haven’t changed.”
“The Democratic Party has been awesome to me in the past. They elected me three terms. I appreciate them and what they’ve done for me,” she added.
To date, four others have taken the first step to become a candidate by filing the “appointment of treasurer” with the county clerk’s office.
So far, three Republican newcomers Shane Long (running for Precinct 2 Justice of the Peace), Jerry Ragle (running for Precinct 2 Commissioner) and Janette Green (running for County Clerk) submitted their paperwork.
Filing for offices up for election in 2010 begins Dec. 3 and runs through Dec. 30.
